Religious biographies

Here are the guidelines for your biographies.

  1. 1.5-2 pages typed and double-spaced
  2. Choose a religious figure (such as a saint) or an important figure who lived by religious principles (such as Abraham Lincoln)
  3. No two people can choose the same person. Register your choice here on the blog. Read everyone else's choice first. If someone else has claimed your first choice, make a second choice.
  4. Use five of the verbs that we learned for indirect speech.

As to content, I am looking for the following:

  • Who was this person?
  • What was the shape of the world that X lived in? (eg ML King grew up in a country that talked about freedom and equality, but denied it to many of its citizens.)
  • What ideas did X live by? (eg Gandhi believed in the principles of Satyagraha, non-violent resistence to oppression and turning the other cheek when hit.)
  • How did X put these ideas into practice? (eg Mother Theresa identified with the poorest of the poor and she dedicated her life to helping people that no one else would touch.)
  • What did X have to sacrifice to follow his/her principles? (eg When Reb Shlomo was seen coming out of a church, he was fired from his job as a Jewish rabbi.)
  • How is the world better or worse because of X? (Because of Osama bin Laden, thousands of people died horribly and extra security measures are needed in the airports. Many people no longer feel safe when travelling because anyone could be a fanatic.)
  • Why did you choose this person?

Thank you. I hope this is clear enough. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me in class.

  4. Joyce Meyer
    written by Jana Langbein

Joyce Meyer was born in 1943 in St. Louis (Missouri). Soon after her birth, her father entered in the Army and fought in World War ll. Meyer stated that her father began to abuse her sexually following his return. Meyer shares her experience in her meetings.
After her graduation from high school, Meyer married a part-time car salesman. Her new husband betrayed her very often and encouraged her to steal money from her employer. She claimed that she had returned the money years later. Their marriage ended five years later.
Meyer met her current husband, Dave Meyer, who worked as an engineering draftsman at a local bar. With him she still is in love and has four grown-up children.

Meyer stated that one day in 1976 while she was driving she heard God call her name. She announced this happened after intensely praying. Meyer had been born again in her late teens. But her lack of happiness caused her to become more involved in praying. Soon after her “meeting” with “the voice of God,” Meyer began to lead an early morning Bible class and became active in Life Christian Church.

In 1980 she became the associate pastor and began her pulpit ministry there by hosting and teaching the weekly women’s Bible study called “Life in the Word”. The church became one of the top churches in Fenton because of Meyer’s popularity. Meyer started her first media ministry with a daily 15-minute radio show on a local station. Meyer resigned from her position as associate pastor in the Life Christian Church in 1985. She built her own ministry and began broadcasting her radio program on six stations from Chicago to Cansas City.
Eight years later Meyer’s husband Dave suggested they begin a television ministry. It aired initially in Chicago and cable station BET. Her program now called “Enjoying Everyday Life” reaches 3 billion people today.

In fact Time magazine chose her as one of the most influential evangelical leaders in America. She is an incredible testimony of the dynamic work of Jesus Christ. She believes and teaches that without looking a person's background or past mistakes, God has a place for them and can help them on their path to enjoying everyday life.
